AC Coupled Battery Inverter Solution
An ac coupled battery inverter is perfect if you have an existing photovoltaic array and want to add energy storage. It’s simple – AC coupling uses a normal solar inverter coupled to a battery inverter/charger to manage the battery storage unit.
In an AC-coupled system, the DC power from the PV array is first converted to AC by the PV inverter and then used to power the AC load panels. Any unused energy is directed by the inverter/charger to charge the storage unit. In a grid-tied system, when the grid fails, the inverter/charger isolates the base load panel and PV inverter from the grid through an internal transfer switch. This allows the PV array to generate electricity even during grid outages.
An AC-coupled setup is simple and powerful, but charging is slightly less efficient than a DC-coupled solution. However, they are very efficient at powering AC loads during the day and can be expanded with multiple solar inverters to form a microgrid.
