Comparison of marking tape and marking paint
Before construction began, the property was located to identify underground hazards such as sewers, electrical wiring and plumbing. The surveyor’s job is then to determine the boundaries of the property and set a baseline. Correct labeling is not only a matter of efficiency and compliance, but also a matter of safety.
Here’s what you need to know about flagging and tagging on the job site, including what to use and when, and our recommendations for each product category.
When to mark and flag
Surveyors use various means to mark work sites. The first step is to create a barrier with a barricade or tape to mark the work site. A combination of perimeter tape and flag tape can be used to create a safety hemline that forms a highly visible barrier that lasts longer than standard cordon tape and is more resistant to extreme weather.
As boundaries were established, detectable and undetectable markers were used to identify utility lines, while flags were used to seal off hazardous areas and alert workers to potential hazards. When it comes to marking, each color has a different meaning.
Here are the colors recommended by the American Institute of Public Works (APWA).
White – Proposed excavation route and restrictions
Pink — Temporary measurement mark
Red — power lines, cables, conduits and lighting cables
Yellow – gas, oil, steam, petroleum or gaseous materials
Orange – Telecommunications, alarm or signal lines, cable TV
Blue – Drinking water
Purple – Reclaimed water, irrigation and mud pipes
Green — sewers and drainage lines
Marker belts are usually used underground in one of two forms to mark the location of utility lines: detectable and undetectable. On the surface, marker flags provide a highly visible, weather-proof indication of utilities, hazards, and other elements. Marking paint or chalk provides a quick and effective way for workers to visually see their surroundings or temporarily identify hazards.
Work site marking points
Having tools suitable for work is a necessary condition for surveyors. Before you use measuring equipment such as total stations and theodolites, you need to mark the work site. Below are the basics of the different types of markup symbols and recommended products for each category.
Tag with
A banner belt is an essential part of any construction site and is a non-sticky, brightly colored symbol for markings and labels. Available in a variety of lengths, widths and thicknesses, marking tape is durable but easy to install and remove. It comes in normal and fluorescent colors, as well as unique patterns and specific legends such as truck roads and timber harvesting boundaries.
Sign paint and chalk
Marking paints and chalk are used for a variety of temporary applications on the work site to mark mines, underground facilities, buildings and excavation sites. Label paints are available in both water – and solvent-based media, usually in inverted cans, for quick and easy application.
Flags and stakes
Flags provide a simple and accurate means of marking work places on surfaces. They are durable, weatherproof and designed to provide good visibility. Pilings can be used as an option to be marked with colored flag bands or beards to identify hazards.
Magnetic nail and nail marking
When you need a labeling solution that is easy to track and detect, magnetic reinforcement nails are the way to go. ChrisNik magnetic nails feature a large center point for ease of use, and they are coated with environmentally friendly zinc and clear chromate for corrosion resistance.
Barricade with
Use a few pilings and some boundary tape to quickly set up a perimeter to increase safety awareness. Security belts and barricades are available in a variety of widths and lengths and are a must for any work site.
