UK grindcore pioneers Napalm Death Merch burn into 2022 with a new EP called Utilitarian. It’s an epilogue to 2020’s Throes Of Joy In The Jaws Of Defeatism and confirms that they can still wreak havoc like no other band in the genre.
Rainbows, fluffy clouds and bunny rabbits might not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Napalm Death, but this pink artistic shirt sure does break the mold.
Taking the “covers album” to a whole new level, Napalm Death and Combo whirlwind through some of their favorite hardcore, speed metal and grindcore pipers. This headbanging, brain-mauling release consists of songs by hardcore legends Agnostic Front and Discharge, thrash/death pioneers Sepultura, Kreator and Hellhammer as well as obscurist crossover favorites Cryptic Slaughter, Wehrmacht and Hirax.
Following the brutal 2020 Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism, UK Grindcore pioneers Napalm Death blitz into 2022 with this nasty little nugget of an EP. Resentment Is Always Seismic sucks you in with a thundering distorted bassline, grinding overdrive guitars, blast beats and Barney’s incomprehensible growls or shrieking high screams that cover sociopolitical themes. It also contains a couple of tracks that are reminiscent of industrial music and includes their cover of Slab’s People Pie. Definitely a must for fans of the band and an excellent appetizer to their vast catalog. This is a KICKASS album!!!.
With a new bass player, a replacement vocalist and a revamped touring set list, Napalm Death fires back with this brutal nugget of an EP. Featuring tracks from last year’s sterling Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism and 2020’s Resentment is Always Seismic – A Final Throw of Throes, this record shows the UK grind band has not lost its edge and can still stand up against younger extreme metal bands.
The opener, Narcissus features a thundering distorted bass line, and a chanting intro that leads into a massive serving of chaotic industrial grind. The riffs are heavy, the drumming is hardcore punk and the voice of Barney is as fierce as ever. This is followed by more songs from the Throes album and then covers of Bad Brains’ People Pie and Slab!’s Deadly Weapon. The Campaign for Musical Destruction era is represented by Dropdead, Siberian Meat Grinder and Escuela Grind. This is a great appetizer for the main course of Napalm Death’s massive catalog and will make anyone hungry for more.

Grindcore gods Napalm Death are on a roll with their latest offering of chaotic industrial grind, Resentment Is Always Seismic. To celebrate, they have released a cool looking bag featuring a rainbow and cute bunny rabbit. The pink artistic tote is 100 percent pre-shrunk, ring spun cotton and comes in sizes small to XL.
While ‘Utilitarian’ may not be the band’s best effort it does show signs of progress in that they are beginning to develop more groove and mid paced ideas with their music. This is a huge departure from ‘Diatribes’ and shows a lot more thought has gone into this record than what came out of it.
This is a pretty polarizing album and many people will not even give it a chance. However, it is a great improvement on the 90s album ‘Harmony Corruption’ and is a solid effort from the band. The heaviness of the album can not be denied and it is a great reminder that Napalm Death are still one of the best bands in metal.
