According to Naval History and Heritage Command, this style of enlisted white dress jumper actually pre-dates the official tropical white uniform that appeared later in the century. And though The Sand Pebbles’ Machinist’s Mate rate patch is anachronistic (the crow should face left, not right), the overall look of the costume is accurate.

On a sheet of bright green felt draw rough triangles, ovals or semi-circles to resemble the black animal-print shapes on Pebbles’ tunic. Use chalk if you need to. Cut out the felt shapes and arrange them over a lime-green T-shirt, tunic or sweatshirt. If the clothing you’re using is long enough or if it has wide black shorts, you can skip the leggings and wear the green shirt alone. Secure the appliques with fabric glue. Make a bone bow by wrapping a 1-inch section of hair around the center of a plastic bone and fastening it with a hair clip, barrette or bobby pins.
