Things you need to know about Detroit diesel fuel pump pressure

The internal combustion engine’s carburetor or fuel injector receives fluids from the fuel tank through a component called a fuel pump.

Fuel-injected engines frequently have electric fuel pumps mounted inside the fuel tank as opposed to the mechanical low-pressure pumps that are frequently mounted outside the fuel tank for carbureted engines (although some fuel-injected engines have two fuel pumps: one low-pressure/high-volume supply pump in the tank and one high pressure/low volume pump on or near the engine).

For the detroit diesel fuel pump pressure to function properly, fuel pressure must meet certain requirements. The engine will run rough if the pressure of the fuel is high and not burning all of the fuel pumps, making the engine inefficient and polluting the environment. The engine may run lean, misfire, or stall if the pressure is too low.

The engine can run without a gasoline pump if it so chooses. Simply putting the tank higher than the carburetor and allowing fuel to feed with gravity will provide the low-pressure fuel that a carbureted engine requires. This technique is frequently used in high-wing airplanes with gasoline tanks in the wings and carbureted motorbikes, where the tank is typically directly above the engine.
